Thoughts on 60 Minutes Social Security Disability Report

On October 6th, 2013, 60 Minutes aired a report on the Social Security Disability system. The report was roundly criticized by many disability advocacy groups, including one that I belong to, NOSSCR (National Organization of Social Security Claimant’s Representatives). It seems the big complaint is that the report was very one-sided and presented primarily anecdotal evidence. I have heard it said that no matter how thinly you slice a piece of cheese, there are always two sides.

Social Security has a strict definition for proving disability, using a five-step sequential analysis. Extensive medical evidence is a critical component of proving any disability case. The cash benefits paid by the Social Security Disability program are not luxurious to say the least. But they do provide a vital lifeline for disabled individuals who have no other reasonable alternatives. Social Security Disability benefits can also enable individuals to get the medical treatment they need for their severe medical condition(s) or illnesses.

In short, the disability program is an important part of the overall Social Security system, which many disabled individuals rely on as a lifeline in the difficult circumstances they face.
